Longleat House Longleat has worked hard to create a reputation as a major family attraction, with a plethora of theme park activities and the world-famous safari park, but at its core the estate still revolves around the superb Elizabethan country house. The house stands as a splendid focal point in the acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown. Thynne finished his grand home in , shortly before his death. Though the exterior maintains its exquisite Tudor facade, the interior has been much altered to follow the changing dictates of comfort and fashion.

The great hall still boasts its Tudor hammer beam roof and carved fireplace, but the rest of the furnishings are Victorian. Much of the interior decoration is in opulent Italian style, modelled after estates in Venice and Genoa. There are superb Flemish tapestries, but the collection of fine period furniture is even better.

Counties of Lavaca and Van Zandt, had had similar problems, except in this case, Texas Rangers were called in to settle matters. Stratford won, or you would be reading the Coldwater Town Page. The name was after Robert E. Lee’s boyhood home, although some say it was after William Shakespere’s Stratford-on-Avon. Actually, Stratford-on-Coldwater has a nice ring to it.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace Henley Street, one of the town’s oldest streets, underwent substantial architectural change between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. John Shakespeare ‘s large half-timbered dwelling, purchased by him in , was in the birthplace of his son William. According to a descriptive placard provided for tourists there, “The property remained in the ownership of Shakespeare’s direct descendants until , when his granddaughter, Elizabeth Barnard, died.

As she had no children, Elizabeth left the estate to her relative Thomas Hart, Shakespeare’s great-nephew. The main house became a tenanted inn called the Maidenhead later the Swan and Maidenhead following the death of John Shakespeare in Members of the Hart family continued living in the small adjoining cottage throughout the century.

British Railway Signalling

As a small boy I was often taken out on the Malvern commons, adjacent to the former GWR line from Worcester to Hereford, and I would watch the trains as they went by – steam, of course, in those days – and the signals being cleared for each train and put back afterwards. My grandfather had been a stationmaster in Malvern and our whole family understood trains and signals.

When I got a bit older, he explained how the signalling system works, and what actually happens inside those mysterious signal boxes – and I was hooked! In my early teens I started travelling around on the railways, and in the summer I would get a week-long rover ticket covering the whole of the Midlands.

I already had a camera by then, so I started to photograph as many interesting signals as I could find. Most of the other rail fans I knew were mainly interested in locomotives, so it struck me that somebody ought to be pointing a camera at these signals, as the traditional semaphore variety were rapidly disappearing by then.

And hats off to you, my dude. What a run you had! And rightly so, if I may chip in. But not any more, mate: According to a tranche of documents released by the CIA, Osama bin Laden visited Stratford-upon-Avon as a teenager, and if we read between the lines a bit, it is extremely obvious that it was then — precisely, inarguably then — that he became irretrievably riled by the West.

I was not impressed and I saw that they were a society different from ours and that they were a morally loose society.

It is a Grade II listed building. The memorial itself is octagonal with terracotta plaques on each face, surmounted by a twelve sided spire. It was unveiled in The Stratford Centre and the recently opened Westfield Stratford City are located on either side of Stratford station. Westfield Stratford City, home to stores, is one of the largest shopping centres in Europe.

The older centre has a range of accessibly-priced stores, its indoor and outdoor market stalls, and the ‘inshops’ network of small retail outlets.

Really disappointing stay here. Booked as a birthday gift but this was far from a “luxury 4* spa break”. Both the spa and hotel appeared run down and in need of some maintenance.

They are a happy team, who after recommendation of an inn will pay a visit to check out the characteristics and ‘Badge’ the establishment for inclusion in the guide. All our Fat Badgers originate from the ‘Forbes’ clan – an ancient order of Badgers who’s sett, located in Badger Lane, Badger has been established for over three centuries.

Over the years various Badgers have moved on to new territories to sniff out the best eating and drinking establishments. Each Fat Badger brings his or her own special abilities to the clan, but all have a special interest in finding good inns, pubs, hotels and restaurants in the United Kingdom that are worth recommending to others. We like inns of character, good food and most are partial to a good pint of traditional British Ale. We are amiable, award winning badgers who sit at the bar, drinking ale, we are members of camra and take our camera with us when we drink champagne.

King Fat Badger is a character who likes to spend his time in comfort, in a comfortable inn, sitting down to dinner with an english drink, good ale. We like good food in friendly surroundings with a warm welcome great company, good cheer in an historic inn with lots of history, an hotel with good hospitality, a memorable inn, restaurant or pub in England, Ireland Scotland or Wales with real traditional ale in an old historic tavern.

Turned out nice again. Industry is concentrated in the towns of Luton, Dunstable, and Bedford. Places worth visiting include:

A Herculean but underpowered effort – Imperium, Swan, RSC, Stratford-upon-Avon, review

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre showing the embedded Swan Theatre The first real theatre in Stratford was a temporary wooden affair built in by the actor David Garrick for his Shakespeare Jubilee celebrations of that year to mark Shakespeare’s birthday. The theatre, built not far from the site of the present Royal Shakespeare Theatre, was almost washed away in two days of torrential rain that resulted in terrible flooding. After three months the Tercentenary Theatre was dismantled, with the timber used for house-building purposes.

An architectural competition was arranged to elicit designs for a new theatre, with the winner, English architect Elisabeth Scott , creating the Royal Shakespeare Theatre we see on the riverside today.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, baptized on 26 April , according to the parish register of the Holy Trinity Church. His birthday is popularly thought to be April 23rd, but as this is both the date of his death 54 years later and St. George’s Day, the coincidence may be too far-fetched.
